Antibody Detection and Identification Program Overview

Program Description

This session will explore the antibody detection techniques available. The participant will review antibody identification worksheets and perform "rule-in" and "rule-out" of antibodies detected. Additionally, the clinical significance of the antibody will be assessed and recommendations for the appropriate transfusion will be made.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the primary and secondary immune response.
  • List blood group system characteristics.
  • State the requirements for antibody detection.
  • Describe antibody detection techniques.
  • Demonstrate the process of including and excluding antibody specificities when performing antibody identification.
  • Assess antibody significance to make transfusion recommendations.

Speaker Credentials

Marie Holub, MA, MT (ASCP) SBB has a Masters Degree in Education and has worked for Blood Systems for 16 years. Marie is the Educational Coordinator for Blood Systems Laboratories. She currently teaches in the on-line Blood Bank Technology Program offered through the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in cooperation with Blood Systems Laboratories.
