The management of the platelet refractory patient presents a challenge for most hospitals and transfusion services. This presentation reviews the pathophysiology and causes of platelet refractoriness. In addition, the presentation reviews current testing methods used for HLA and HPA typing and the detection and identification of alloantibodies that may cause platelet alloimmune refractoriness.

Dolores Figueroa, MT (ASCP) SBB, is an IRL System specialist with Blood Systems, Inc.; she is responsible for the technical direction of the BSI Immunohematology Reference Laboratory reference testing activities. Previously Dolores was the Technical Director for the Blood Systems Laboratories Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL). Dolores joined Blood Systems in July 2000. She holds a certificate in Medical Technology from the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Science Campus. She attended the Atlanta ARC SBB School, and is a certified medical technologist and specialist in blood banking through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). The narrator of the presentation is Marie Holub, MA; MT (ASCP) SBB has a Master’s Degree in Education and has worked for Blood Systems for 18 years.
