
This program will discuss the special considerations unique to neonatal transfusion. These tiny patients present challenges to the clinician and transfusion service due to their small size and immature physiology and organ systems. The neonate's immature immune system is the source of additional concerns related to Graft-Versus-Host Disease, but also allows abbreviated testing protocols since most infants do not develop alloantibodies until at least four months of age. This program will review aspects of neonatal physiology that impact transfusion, significant issues to be considered when choosing components for transfusion, abbreviated testing methods and additional concerns including Graft-Versus-Host Disease and Neonatal Allo Immune Thrombocytopenia.
