Transfusing Blood Appropriately Program Overview

Program Description

This course will discuss the background on the clinical use of red cell transfusions in the United States.

It will then address the most common clinical scenarios requiring transfusion, including providing a clinical decision framework to help guide transfusion-related decisions and efforts undertaken to address the overuse of transfusions in the US.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • Summarize current adult red blood cell transfusion guidelines and their basis in evidence.
  • Appropriately order, administer, and monitor red blood cell transfusions in clinical practice.
