Program Description

This presentation will provide a basic understanding of the criteria used to determine if a transfusion is required, the types of products available and the patient care involved with each type of transfusion.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, the participant will be able to:

• Explain the common blood components used in the acute care setting
• Identify the clinical and laboratory indications for red cells, plasma and platelets
• Understand blood component administration
• Explain patient care and the prevention and treatment of adverse effects in the patient
